HALIFAX – Conservative MP Marilyn Gladue has officially joined the Liberal party, CBC News reported Friday.
Gladue, representing a riding in southwestern Ontario, stated her decision was influenced by the Prime Minister’s plans regarding housing, trade diversification, and crime reduction, aligning with the priorities of her constituents.
According to the broadcast, reactions to the move have been mixed, with some constituents expressing feelings of betrayal. Commentators on the program discussed the implications of MPs changing parties, with some suggesting a by-election should be triggered. However, one commentator argued against by-elections, suggesting they would empower party leaders.
An alternative proposal discussed on CBC News involved a 30-day pause for MPs considering crossing the floor, during which they would sit as independents and consult with constituents.
Ceasefire Concerns
CBC News also reported on the fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, noting Lebanon’s prominent role in the situation. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed a desire to begin direct talks with Lebanon to discuss disarming Hezbollah and establishing peaceful relations, according to the broadcast.
Lebanon’s health ministry reported over 300 deaths from Israeli attacks on Friday. Iran stated that these attacks constitute a violation of the truce, claiming the ceasefire extends to Lebanon. The U.S. and Israel dispute this, with Washington supporting Israeli attacks on Hezbollah targets. Hezbollah and Israel exchanged fire earlier Friday along the Israel-Lebanon border.
Iran has indicated it will maintain its control over the Strait of Hormuz until the situation in Lebanon is resolved. CBC News’ Megan Williams, reporting from Dubai, stated that air raid sirens had not been heard in the UAE for the first time since the conflict began six weeks ago.
