Several years ago, a real estate listing brought a wave of emotions, revealing a transformed childhood home in Vancouver. The property had been rebuilt into a sprawling 3,500-square-foot mansion, marketed as prestigious and luxurious, with a price tag of $3.5 million.
From Modest Home to Luxury Estate
The new home features a two-toned brick driveway with pillars and automatic gates. Inside, high coffered ceilings are accented with gold and chandeliers, complemented by strategically placed tall ceramic vases and a panorama marble bathroom. This starkly contrasts with the author’s memories of a simpler time.
Memories of a Family Home
The author recalls a modest Spanish-style house, a far cry from the current estate. Two of the bathrooms were even carpeted—a puzzling design choice from 1974. The front yard, now a three-door garage, was once a haven of maples and rhododendrons, a place for snow angels and childhood debates.
The author’s father dedicated his retirement to tending the front yard, often accompanied by the sound of piano music from inside the house. A Yamaha piano, a gift to their mother, held a special place in the family’s heart. The living room was decorated with Chinese calligraphy and an embroidered artwork of twelve birds, symbolizing “Good news every month.”
A Space Filled with Life
The home served as the backdrop for significant life events, including sharing future aspirations with their mother, receiving a marriage proposal, and hearing the heartbreaking news of their father’s illness. The kitchen and backyard vegetable garden, now replaced by a marble-floored kitchen island, were also central to cherished memories.
A Disheartening Return
A recent visit to the property revealed a disheartening scene. The house appeared abandoned, with moss-covered pillars, a “BEWARE OF DOG” sign, and overgrown shrubs. Drawn curtains and the absence of a welcoming doormat added to the sense of emptiness.
The author reflects on the transient nature of the current occupants – rotating renters, vacationers, or perhaps no one at all. Despite the changes, the author resolves to hold onto the priceless memories of the home as it once was.
