A new Calgary store, (M)artkit, is promoting sustainability and accessibility in the arts by operating as a thrift store for arts and crafts supplies, alongside a dedicated studio space for creative projects.

Addressing a Common Crafter's Dilemma

Many crafters accumulate surplus materials, leading to overflowing storage and unused supplies. (M)artkit directly addresses this issue, offering a novel solution for artists and craft enthusiasts.

The Vision Behind (M)artkit

Founded by Kourtney Penner, (M)artkit aims to make art more sustainable and accessible to everyone. Penner, a former Calgary city councillor for Ward 11, brings a diverse background in the arts, non-profit sector, and government to her passion project.

Her aim is to foster a sense of community, celebrating the joy of creation, the excitement of uncovering hidden treasures, and the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

How (M)artkit Works

The store offers a wide variety of donated crafting supplies, allowing shoppers to purchase only what they need – whether it’s a few pipe cleaners or a partial skein of yarn. This reduces waste and offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional art supply stores.

According to Penner, this approach is inherently more sustainable and cost-effective.

Donations and Accepted Items

(M)artkit welcomes donations of up to two bags of crafting goods during opening hours, with pre-sorting encouraged. Larger donations require advance scheduling. A comprehensive list of accepted items is available on the store’s website.

A Creative Hub and Collaborative Opportunities

Beyond retail, (M)artkit features a studio space available for booking, providing access to a wide range of supplies. Patrons can even exchange time spent sorting donations for studio access, fostering a collaborative environment.

Future Plans and Location

Penner envisions (M)artkit as a social and sustainable haven for art enthusiasts. The store plans to launch summer workshops led by guest instructors. (M)artkit is located at 6230 Centre St. S.E., Calgary, and can be reached at 587-225-9758.
