HALIFAX – A recently announced ceasefire in Lebanon is being challenged by ongoing conflict, CBC News reported Friday.

Middle East Conflict and Shipping Concerns

Continued Israeli military action is hindering the ceasefire's progress. Oxfam policy lead in Lebanon, Marwan Issa, stated that eight bridges have been destroyed by Israeli attacks, isolating approximately 150,000 people in southern Lebanon. He emphasized the urgent need for an end to hostilities and access for humanitarian aid.

According to the broadcast, Iran has threatened to increase its control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route. A letter purportedly written by the Ayatollah, read on Iranian state TV, stated Iran will take management of the Strait of Hormuz to a “new level.” While Iran claims ships can use the route with coordination, fewer than a dozen ships have passed through in the first days of the temporary deal, and reports suggest Iran is charging tolls.

U.S. President Donald Trump responded on social media, stating Iran is “doing a very poor job” and warning that oil will flow through the Strait “with or without Iran’s help.” NATO members are preparing to respond to potential disruptions to the global energy supply. Trump also stated he will keep additional American military assets in the Middle East until a peace deal is finalized and threatened further action against Iran if his demands are not met.

During the CBC News broadcast, it was reported that Trump’s recent actions and statements, including a threat to “wipe out a civilization,” have sparked calls for his removal from office.

Canadian Political Developments

Canada’s Prime Minister is defending his decision to welcome former Conservative MP Marilyn Gladue into the Liberal caucus, despite her past positions on issues such as abortion and conversion therapy. Gladue stated she will vote with the government and protect the rights and freedoms of women to choose.

CBC News reported that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has faced questions regarding his leadership following Gladue’s floor crossing and the resignation of a top aide. Sources within the Conservative party indicated low morale and concerns about further defections, though no effort to oust Poilievre is currently underway.
