Islamabad, Pakistan – Delegations from the United States and Iran have commenced talks in Pakistan, aiming to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, CBC News Network reported.

Gaza Ceasefire in Jeopardy

The ceasefire in Gaza is reportedly failing, with ongoing violence and insufficient aid reaching the territory. Aid agencies state that the amount of aid entering Gaza through the single Israeli crossing is significantly below required levels. Over 670 Palestinians have been reported dead since last October, according to Gaza health officials.

During the broadcast, it was stated that U.S. President Donald Trump has asserted that Iran is “militarily defeated” and threatened to open the Strait of Hormuz “with or without them.” Trump reportedly considers Iran’s continued control of the Strait of Hormuz and its highly enriched uranium as red lines, demanding “no nuclear weapon” as a primary condition for a deal.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker has stated that talks will only begin if a ceasefire is established in Lebanon and Iran’s blocked assets are released. Israel continues to conduct airstrikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, with hundreds killed this week, and has agreed to discuss a ceasefire with Lebanon next Tuesday, but is not directly negotiating with Hezbollah or Iran.

Canadian Job Market Concerns

Canada’s labour market stabilized in March with an unemployment rate of 6.7%, virtually unchanged from the previous month. However, the addition of 14,000 jobs was insufficient to offset the over 100,000 positions lost earlier in the year. The unemployment rate among 15 to 24-year-olds is around 14%, according to Statistics Canada. Employers are reporting increased competition for entry-level positions as older, laid-off workers compete with young job seekers.
