London, UK – Concerns are growing in the United Kingdom regarding a rise in proxy attacks potentially linked to foreign states, particularly targeting Jewish communities. Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, has expressed increasing apprehension about this trend.

Growing Concerns Over State-Sponsored Attacks

Sir Keir Starmer voiced his concerns during a visit to the Kenton United Synagogue in northwest London. The synagogue, along with other Jewish community sites, has recently been targeted by arson attacks. He emphasized the need for new legislation to counter malign state actors.

Potential Iranian Involvement

The Prime Minister’s concerns are heightened by the possibility of direct financial involvement from Iran in orchestrating these acts by recruiting British criminals. Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of any foreign state involvement.

Recent Incidents and Claims of Responsibility

A series of incidents have occurred, including the arson attack on Kenton United Synagogue, where a 17-year-old has admitted guilt. Jewish community ambulances have also been targeted with arson, and attempts were made to set fire to a synagogue in Finchley and a former Jewish charity building in Hendon.

Further threats include a drone flown near the Israeli embassy in London and a petrol bomb thrown at Volant Media, the parent company of the Persian news channel Iran International. A group calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right, has claimed responsibility for many of these attacks, as well as similar incidents across Europe since March 9th.

Investigation and Response

Intelligence agencies suspect this group is backed by Iran, adding complexity to the situation. Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes stated that police are meticulously investigating the veracity of the group’s claims.

Escalation of Threats

Jukes described the current period as ‘extraordinary,’ noting that while the UK has previously dealt with hate crimes and radicalization, the prospect of a foreign state actively utilizing these elements to sow discord is deeply concerning. He stressed the importance of differentiating between online rhetoric and provable actions.

The focus is on apprehending those directly involved in the attacks and identifying the foreign state actors believed to be orchestrating them. A comprehensive and coordinated response from law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and community organizations, including the Community Security Trust (CST), is underway.
