French President Emmanuel Macron has initiated diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East. He engaged in separate phone conversations on Monday with former U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian.

Call for De-escalation and Resumption of Talks

During these discussions, Macron stressed the urgent need for de-escalation in the region. He specifically advocated for the resumption of suspended negotiations, the clarification of misunderstandings, and the prevention of further escalation.

Macron emphasized the importance of a comprehensive ceasefire that includes Lebanon and the unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He believes these steps are crucial for enabling a swift recommencement of negotiations with international support.

Paris Conference on Maritime Security

President Macron also announced that France, in collaboration with the United Kingdom, will host a conference in Paris this Friday. This event will convene non-belligerent countries willing to contribute to a multilateral and purely defensive mission.

Objective of the Paris Conference

The primary goal of the conference is to restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz once security conditions permit. This initiative aims to stabilize the strategically vital waterway, crucial for global trade and energy supplies.

The proposed mission is intended to foster collective security and safeguard international maritime traffic. Its defensive nature underscores a commitment to protecting sea lanes without engaging in offensive actions.

Iran's Stance on Negotiations

In response to Macron's outreach, Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian reportedly conveyed Iran's readiness to continue talks. However, Iran insists that negotiations must adhere to international laws and regulations, prioritizing the rights of the Iranian people.

Pezeshkian also suggested that Europe could play a constructive role in encouraging the United States to align with these principles. This indicates Iran's conditional willingness to engage in dialogue, emphasizing the need for international legal frameworks and the protection of its citizens' interests.
