Israeli drone strikes and airstrikes in Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of at least 17 people, including children, despite a ceasefire agreement reached on April 17. The attacks mark a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Drone Strikes South of Beirut
Three Israeli drone strikes targeted vehicles south of Beirut on Saturday, killing four people. Two of the strikes occurred on the highway connecting Beirut to the southern port city of Sidon, injuring several individuals. The third strike took place on a road leading to Lebanon’s Chouf region, resulting in three fatalities.
An Associated Press journalist at the scene witnessed a dead body on the highway in the town of Saadiyat, highlighting the immediate impact of the strikes.
Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon
In addition to the drone strikes, a series of Israeli airstrikes targeted southern Lebanon, killing at least 13 people. Among the casualties was a man and his 12-year-old daughter. The Health Ministry reported that an airstrike on the village of Saksakiyeh resulted in seven deaths, including a child, and wounded 15 others.
Further strikes were reported in the villages of Bourj Rahhal and Maifadoun, killing three and one person, respectively. The Health Ministry emphasized that these were initial counts and the toll could rise.
Escalation Despite Ceasefire
The recent attacks represent a significant escalation since the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect. Both sides have continued their daily attacks despite the truce. On Wednesday night, Israel’s air force carried out an airstrike on a southern suburb of Beirut, killing a senior Hezbollah military official. This was the first strike near the capital since the ceasefire was reached.
The ongoing violence underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the continued tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.
