Iran Presents 30-Day Plan for Conflict Resolution
Iran has submitted a 14-point proposal to the United States, outlining a plan to end the ongoing conflict within 30 days. This initiative follows recent statements from US President Donald Trump indicating a review of a new Iranian proposal, rather than an extension of the existing ceasefire.
Key Demands of the Iranian Proposal
The Iranian plan, as reported by state-linked media, directly responds to a previous nine-point proposal from the US. It includes several core demands: the complete lifting of US sanctions, the end of the naval blockade currently imposed on Iran, and the withdrawal of US forces from the region. A comprehensive halt to hostile actions, specifically including the cessation of Israeli operations in Lebanon, is also requested.
Strait of Hormuz Control
A central point of contention revolves around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway for global oil and gas trade. Iran insists on maintaining its position regarding the strait, rejecting any compromise. Ali Nikzad, Iran’s deputy parliament speaker, stated that Iran will not relinquish control and will not return to pre-war conditions.
Iran proposes allowing passage to vessels not affiliated with the US or Israel, contingent upon payment of a toll. The US has threatened sanctions against shipping companies complying with these demands. Previously, Iran disrupted shipping through the strait, later offering safe passage through routes closer to its shores for a fee.
Economic Impact and International Pressure
The conflict has significantly impacted Iran’s economy. The Iranian rial has weakened considerably, reaching 1,840,000 rials per dollar – a substantial drop from 1.3 million in December. This decline has fueled widespread protests.
Markets in Tehran are experiencing instability with rising prices for essential goods. Reports indicate factories are not renewing worker contracts, leading to job losses. Diplomatic pressure is also mounting, with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul urging Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and abandon its nuclear weapons program during a conversation with Abbas Araghchi.
Negotiation Stalemate
Yousef Pezeshkian, an advisor to the Iranian President, suggests both the US and Iran believe they are achieving victory in the conflict, contributing to a stalemate in negotiations. While the current ceasefire is holding, the prospects for a lasting resolution remain uncertain.
