Iran Presents 30-Day Plan for Conflict Resolution
Iran has submitted a 14-point proposal to the United States, seeking a resolution to the ongoing conflict within 30 days. The plan outlines several key demands, including the lifting of US sanctions and the withdrawal of US forces from the region.
Key Demands of the Iranian Proposal
Sanctions Relief and Force Withdrawal
The Iranian proposal calls for the complete removal of US sanctions and an end to the naval blockade currently imposed on Iran. It also demands the withdrawal of all US forces from the region and a halt to hostile actions, specifically mentioning Israeli operations in Lebanon.
Control of the Strait of Hormuz
A central component of the Iranian plan concerns control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and gas trade. Ali Nikzad, Iran’s deputy parliament speaker, stated Iran will not concede its position on the strait and will not return to pre-war conditions.
Iran asserts its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, proposing that vessels not affiliated with the US or Israel would be permitted passage upon payment of a toll. This directly challenges a US proposal to reopen the strait without such conditions.
International Response and US Skepticism
International pressure is mounting on Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and abandon its nuclear program. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul urged Iran to reopen the waterway and verifiably abandon its nuclear weapons program during a call with Abbas Araghchi.
President Donald Trump acknowledged reviewing the Iranian proposal but expressed skepticism about its potential for a definitive agreement. The US has also warned shipping companies against paying Iran for safe passage, threatening potential sanctions.
Economic Impact and Internal Challenges
The conflict and the US-led naval blockade are significantly impacting the Iranian economy. The Iranian rial has weakened considerably, reaching 1,840,000 rials per dollar, a substantial decline from 1.3 million in December.
Tehran’s markets are experiencing instability, with rising prices and factory closures leading to job losses. Yousef Pezeshkian, an advisor to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, suggests both sides believe they can emerge victorious, hindering compromise.
Mediation Efforts
The communication of the Iranian plan was facilitated through Pakistani intermediaries, a role Pakistan has previously undertaken. Ongoing diplomatic efforts involve Pakistan, Oman, Germany, and the US.
The situation remains volatile, with the ceasefire holding but a lasting resolution uncertain. Differing perspectives on the Strait of Hormuz and economic pressures pose significant obstacles to any potential agreement.
