Emerging intelligence indicates that the Islamic Republic of Iran possesses a larger remaining military capacity than publicly acknowledged by the White House and the Pentagon.
Contradictory Assessments
Multiple U.S. officials, speaking anonymously, have disclosed that approximately half of Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal and launch systems were still operational at the start of the recent ceasefire in early April. This contradicts earlier statements made by President Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth regarding the complete dismantling of Iran’s military capabilities.
Naval Strength Intact
Roughly 60% of the naval forces belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) remain intact, including their fleet of fast-attack speed boats. This strength was demonstrated on Wednesday with reported attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, shortly after President Trump announced a ceasefire extension for peace negotiations.
Air Power Persists
Despite the intensive joint U.S. and Israeli military campaign, Operation Epic Fury, which targeted thousands of Iranian military sites, Iranian air power has not been entirely neutralized. Officials estimate that approximately two-thirds of Iran’s air force remains operational.
Operation Epic Fury's Limited Impact
While acknowledging damage to Iran’s conventional navy, assessments reveal the IRGC’s naval arm, designed for asymmetrical warfare, has largely survived. This surviving force is currently identified as the primary source of disruption to oil shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
DIA Assessment
The head of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Marine Lt. Gen. James Adams, stated in a written statement that “Iran retains thousands of missiles and one-way attack UAVs that can threaten U.S. and partner forces throughout the region, despite degradations to its capabilities from both attrition and expenditure.”
Pentagon's Stance
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell maintains the war has been a success, citing the destruction of over 13,000 Iranian targets. He claimed, “In less than 40 days, the United States military delivered a crippling series of blows to the Iranian regime,” and reported the destruction of 92% of the Iranian Navy’s largest vessels and approximately 44 minelayers.
Parnell further expressed the Defense Secretary’s pride and criticized media outlets for “discounting their efforts.” The conflicting narratives suggest that while Operation Epic Fury inflicted significant damage, it did not achieve the complete military incapacitation of Iran as initially portrayed.
