Israeli forces intercepted a flotilla attempting to break the naval blockade of Gaza, detaining approximately 175 activists, including at least two Canadian citizens. The interception occurred far from Israeli shores, raising questions about its legality and prompting calls for the safe return of those detained.

Flotilla Intercepted in International Waters

The incident unfolded in the Mediterranean Sea as Israeli forces intercepted 22 vessels attempting to breach the nearly two-decade-long naval blockade of Gaza. The interception took place approximately 500 nautical miles off the coast of Crete, in international waters.

Canadian Citizens Among Those Detained

Ehab Lotayef, a flotilla organizer based in Montreal, confirmed that at least two Canadians are among those detained. Lotayef, who was preparing to join the flotilla, expressed concern over the distance of the interception, calling it an “illegal abduction” given the unarmed nature of the activists and their humanitarian mission.

Call for Government Intervention

Lotayef urgently appealed to the Canadian government to intervene and secure the safe return of the detained Canadians.

Israel Justifies Interception

The Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed the detention of approximately 175 activists from over 20 boats. They stated the interception was a preemptive measure to uphold the blockade.

Hamas Allegations

The ministry alleged that Hamas, the governing body of Gaza, was behind the flotilla, implying a security threat. This claim remains unverified.

Past Interceptions and Allegations

This incident echoes previous confrontations, including a similar interception last fall during the initial voyage of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which detained over 400 activists, including Greta Thunberg and Nelson Mandela’s grandson. Six Canadians were also detained last year during a Freedom Flotilla mission.

Allegations of Mistreatment

Previously detained individuals have alleged mistreatment while in Israeli custody, accusations Israeli authorities have denied.

Controversial Blockade

The legality of Israel’s naval blockade and its enforcement in international waters remains a contentious issue. Israel maintains the blockade prevents Hamas from acquiring weaponry, while critics denounce it as collective punishment against Gaza’s civilian population.

International Condemnation

Turkey’s foreign ministry strongly condemned the interception, labeling it an act of piracy. The Global Sumud Flotilla aims to highlight the plight of Palestinians and challenge the blockade’s legitimacy.

The detention of activists, especially Canadians, is likely to increase diplomatic pressure on Israel and reignite debate over its Gaza policies. Concerns are growing due to the lack of access to those detained and uncertainty about their well-being.
