A 5.6-pound Yorkshire Terrier is courageously fighting for her life at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) while nursing her three surviving puppies. The dog, named Saturn, is in the critical care Parvo ICU unit, facing the severe challenges posed by parvovirus.
Saturn's Difficult Journey
Saturn recently gave birth to a litter of nine puppies. Sadly, only six of the initial nine puppies made it to the rescue. Overnight, three more puppies tragically succumbed, leaving only three dependent on Saturn’s care.
Dedicated Care at Austin Pets Alive!
The dedicated team at Austin Pets Alive! is providing Saturn with medical care and support, working to help her overcome the illness and ensure her puppies’ survival. Staff describe her as exhausted and fragile, yet she continues to nurse her puppies.
The Cost of Treatment
Each parvo treatment regimen for Saturn costs the nonprofit nearly $1,000, placing a significant strain on their financial resources. Despite this, APA! remains committed to providing the best possible care.
A History of Success
The Parvo ICU at APA! has treated over 10,000 parvo-positive puppies since 2009, achieving an impressive survival rate of approximately 90%. In 2025 alone, the unit saved 659 puppies.
Preventative Measures
Veterinarians emphasize that parvovirus is preventable through vaccination. Puppies can begin their vaccination series as early as 6 to 8 weeks of age, with boosters continuing until they are at least 4 months old. Avoiding public areas until vaccination is complete is crucial.
