Researchers tracking children in Denmark and the United States have identified a significant correlation between early childhood illnesses and the later development of eczema.. The 60% risk spike in Danish and US cohorts
The study, as reported in JAMA Dermatology, analyzed two distinct groups to ensure the findings were not limited to a single population. In Denmark, researchers monitored 663 children, recording daily instances of infections—including pneumonia, tonsillitis, and ear infections—until the age of three.
The data revealed a stark trend: children who experienced the highest frequency of infections were 60 percent more likely to be diagnosed with eczema than those with the fewest. This pattern was successfully replicated in a second cohort of 707 children in the United States, providing a level of cross-continental validation for the link.
Factoring out the filaggrin gene and antibiotic use
While eczema is widely understood to be driven by genetic factors, this research suggests that environmental triggers like respiratory illness are independently significant. The researchers specifically accounted for variants in the filaggrin gene, which is one of the most well-established genetic risk factors for atopic dermatitis.
Furthermore, the association between infections and eczema remained even after the team adjusted for antibiotic use.. This suggests that the risk is not merely a byproduct of how many infections are treated with medication, but rather a potential result of how early respiratory illnesses interact with a devveloping immune system. Despite the strong correlation, the study leaves several critical questions unanswered regarding the biological "why" behind these findings. Because the study was observational, it could not definitively prove that infections directly cause eczema.
One major uncertainty is whether the infections themselves trigger the skin condition, or if children with underlying, undiagnosed eczema are simply more susceptible to frequent respiratory infections. Additionally, the researchers noted that many eczema diagnoses occurred during the same period the infections were being recorded, making it difficult to establish a clear chronological sequence. until the exact biological mechanisms are identified, healthcare providers cannot yet say if preventing colds will directly prevent eczema.
