China , India, and Indonesia alone account for nearly half of the world's exposed population. This concentration suggests that international health efforts must prioritize tobacco control in these specific nations to see a meaningful reduction in the global death toll.

The UK's 50 percent reduction in passive smoke deaths

The United Kingdom serves as a successful model for reducing passive smoke mortality through aggressive policy. Between 1990 and 2023, British smoking prevalence fell from 30 percent to 10 percent, which significantly lowered the number of people exposed to smoke.

As reported in The Lancet Public Health, these changes helped reduce the estimated number of deaths attributed to passive smoke in the UK from approximately 14,900 to 6,100. to maintain this progress,the study suggests that governments should adopt measures already used in Britain, such as higher tobacco taxes,advertising bans,and plain packaging.
