Sault Area Hospital is actively participating in Mental Health Week, taking place from May 4th to 10th, 2026, with a series of community-focused events and the unveiling of a captivating new interactive mural installation.
Raising Awareness and Reducing Stigma
The hospital’s initiatives are designed to foster connection, encourage reflection, and instill hope, while simultaneously raising awareness about mental health, reducing associated stigma, and showcasing the vital local resources available for mental health and addiction support. The week’s activities aim to create a supportive environment where community members can learn, connect, and access the care they need.
Information Table
A key component of the hospital’s outreach will be an information table staffed by representatives from the Canadian Mental Health Association Algoma, Sault Area Hospital’s mental health and addictions team, and dedicated Patient and Family Advisors. This table, located in the hospital lobby, will serve as a central hub for information.
The information table will be open on May 4th and 5th, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, offering convenient access to crucial resources.
Mental Health Symposium: ‘Stronger Together’
Sault Area Hospital is hosting a comprehensive Mental Health Symposium on Thursday, May 7th, 2026, in collaboration with Sault Community Health Centre, Canadian Mental Health Association Algoma, Algoma Ontario Health Team, and Algoma Family Services. Approximately 200 healthcare professionals and community partners are expected to attend.
The symposium’s theme, ‘Stronger Together,’ underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing trauma and addiction. The full-day event will feature presentations and workshops led by experts, front-line workers, and individuals with lived experience.
Key sessions include ‘From Insight to Action: Implementing Trauma-Informed Care’ and ‘Beyond Self-Care: Building a Robust Approach to Navigating High-Stress, Trauma-Exposed Work,’ both led by Diana Tikasz, MSW, RSW. Other sessions include ‘Stay or Go Training’ facilitated by Nimkii-Naabkawagan Family Crisis Shelter, and ‘Emerging Trends in Addictions Medicine’ with Dr. Kaustubh Bal, MD, and Erin McCaig, RN.
Interactive Mural: ‘Cocoon to Community’
The hospital is also proud to unveil ‘Cocoon to Community,’ a new interactive mural installation dedicated to mental health, personal growth, and community connection. The project originated from the vision of the Mental Health and Addictions Patient and Family Advisors Committee (PFAC).
‘Cocoon to Community’ visually represents a journey of transformation – from introspection to connection. The mural symbolizes emerging from isolation and engaging with others, built around the themes of growth, connection, hope, and resilience.
The installation is designed to be dynamic and interactive, allowing community members to contribute through button images and artwork submitted on letter-sized paper. A drop box is provided for submissions, which must be free of offensive content. The mural is located on level one, C-wing, at the main Sault Area Hospital site.
This project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Patient and Family Advisors, mental health and addictions leadership, the hospital’s communications team, and funding from the Sault Area Hospital Foundation.
