Raw Farm has issued a voluntary recall of multiple cheddar cheese products across the United States after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned of a possible connection to an E. coli outbreak.

FDA Investigation and Outbreak Details

The FDA, working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health departments, is investigating the outbreak. As of March 26th, nine cases have been confirmed across California, Florida, and Texas. A significant number of those affected are children under five years old.

Recall Issued 'Under Protest'

Raw Farm, a company specializing in raw milk cheese, issued the recall “under protest.” The company states it has not detected pathogens in its products or in samples analyzed by state officials, but views the recall as a “path forward.”

Affected Products and Retail Locations

The recall includes various shredded and block cheddar cheese varieties. These products were available for purchase at retail locations nationwide, including Sprouts Farmers Market and H-E-B stores. The FDA indicates the cheese may have been sold at other retailers as well.

Consumer and Retailer Guidance

Consumers are advised to check refrigerators and freezers for the recalled cheese products and dispose of them immediately if found. Retailers are urged to remove the products from shelves. Detailed product specifications are available in the FDA’s official recall announcement.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Health Concerns

The FDA’s investigation is ongoing to determine the precise link between the cheese and the reported illnesses. The agency previously requested a recall from Raw Farm on multiple occasions. This situation highlights the risks associated with raw milk products, which carry a higher risk of contamination compared to pasteurized options. The FDA’s actions underscore the importance of public health and safety protocols.
