A Kentucky man’s seizure, brought on by laughter at a missed field goal during a Monday Night Football game, led to the discovery and successful removal of a brain tumor. Mark Toothaker believes the kicker unknowingly saved his life.
Unexpected Diagnosis
Mark Toothaker, a 59-year-old stallion season manager at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, experienced a life-altering event last December. While watching the New York Giants play the New England Patriots with his wife, Malory, Toothaker reacted to a comical field goal miss by Giants kicker Younghoe Koo.
Seizure Leads to Discovery
The hilarity of the moment caused Toothaker to laugh uncontrollably, ultimately leading to a seizure. Initially dismissed as a joke, the situation quickly became serious. Malory, a nurse specializing in brain injuries, immediately called 911, and Toothaker was rushed to the hospital.
Successful Treatment and Recovery
A CT scan revealed a tennis-ball-sized tumor on the left side of his brain. Fortunately, the tumor was benign and successfully removed during surgery at the University of Kentucky hospital.
Toothaker recovered remarkably quickly, returning home within the week with no lasting neurological damage.
A Fortunate Turn of Events
Toothaker firmly believes the missed field goal was instrumental in saving his life. He emphasizes the seizure could have occurred during travel for work or, more tragically, while driving.
He acknowledges the irony of the situation, recognizing that a seemingly unfortunate moment for the kicker ultimately led to the discovery of a life-threatening condition. Toothaker even expressed a desire to invite Koo to the Kentucky Derby as a gesture of gratitude.
Looking Ahead
Now with a clean bill of health, Toothaker is looking forward to attending the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, where Spendthrift Farm-owned Further Ado is set to compete. He views his experience as a miracle, emphasizing the fortunate timing and circumstances.
His wife, Malory, echoes this sentiment, highlighting the blessing of the seizure occurring at home. They both feel immense gratitude, recognizing that many others are not so fortunate.
Toothaker’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the unexpected ways in which seemingly negative events can lead to positive outcomes.
