Misdiagnosis to Leukemia: Jade Horseman's 7-Month Fight
A Prolonged Struggle for Diagnosis
Jade Horseman’s experience highlights the critical importance of early detection and awareness of rare diseases. For seven months, she endured persistent fatigue and flu-like symptoms, repeatedly dismissed by medical professionals.
Initial Misdiagnoses and Worsening Symptoms
Despite numerous visits to her general practitioner (GP), emergency calls, and two trips to A&E, Jade’s condition was consistently misdiagnosed as burnout, hormonal imbalances, or sinus infections. The 29-year-old fitness enthusiast found herself unable to exercise and frequently canceled social plans.
Jade eventually took extended leave from work and even changed jobs, hoping to alleviate her stress. She also suffered a severe tooth infection that didn’t respond to antibiotics, adding to her worsening symptoms of night sweats, headaches, fevers, and debilitating exhaustion.
A Near-Fatal Collapse and Accurate Diagnosis
Frustrated and desperate, Jade returned to A&E, only to be sent home with more antibiotics. Her condition dramatically worsened when she collapsed in the shower, unable to move.
After a difficult struggle to call for help, she was admitted to Charing Cross Hospital. A blood test revealed she had sepsis and was immediately transferred to Hammersmith Hospital. In March 2021, she received the shocking diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), a rare and aggressive blood cancer.
Treatment and Remission
While ALL is common in children with high survival rates, the prognosis for adults is significantly less optimistic. Jade was relieved to finally have an explanation for her symptoms, but devastated by the severity of her condition.
Immediate treatment was necessary, precluding her from preserving her fertility. Over the following three months, Jade underwent grueling chemotherapy and immunotherapy, followed by two years of maintenance treatment. In December 2023, she received the life-changing news that she was in remission.
Research Highlights Systemic Issues
New research from Leukaemia UK confirms that Jade’s experience is not unique, shedding light on the diagnostic challenges faced by many adults with blood cancers. Her story underscores the need for improved awareness and faster diagnosis of these life-threatening illnesses.
