A grieving husband is sharing his wife’s eight-year battle with ovarian cancer to raise awareness of the subtle symptoms that can be easily dismissed, hoping to save lives through early detection.
A Heartbreaking Loss
Matt Miles, a police officer from Gloucestershire, is appealing to the public to recognize the often-overlooked symptoms of ovarian cancer following the death of his wife, Katy, at the age of 46. He hopes sharing their experience will empower others to seek early diagnosis.
Early Symptoms and Diagnosis
Katy’s initial symptom in 2016 was bladder control loss during a CrossFit class, which was initially attributed to exercise. A subsequent scan revealed an abnormality, initially thought to be a cyst. On December 16, 2016, Katy received the shock diagnosis of low-grade serous ovarian carcinoma, a rare and slower-growing subtype of the disease.
Years of Treatment
Katy underwent arduous treatment over eight years, including bowel resection, extensive surgery to remove lesions from multiple organs, a stoma bag, a hysterectomy, and multiple rounds of chemotherapy. Despite periods of improvement, the cancer repeatedly returned, eventually spreading to her bones and skin by May 2024.
Declining Health and Passing
While initial treatments offered hope, their effectiveness diminished over time, and Katy’s quality of life declined. In her final months, she experienced increasing pain and kidney problems requiring a nephrostomy. Katy passed away on September 24, 2024, leaving Matt and her sister, Lucy, devastated.
Turning Grief into Action
Now, Matt is channeling his grief into raising awareness about ovarian cancer’s early warning signs, emphasizing that seemingly insignificant symptoms should not be dismissed. He is also fundraising for the charity that supported Katy during her illness.
Fundraising Efforts
Matt has undertaken a series of challenges linked to Katy’s police collar number, 1481, including burpees, rowing, running, and a cold water dip, as well as walking sections of the Camino de Santiago. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance and early detection in the fight against this devastating disease, and a tribute to Katy’s strength.
