A cruise ship carrying passengers from Argentina to Africa is currently stranded at sea following a deadly outbreak of hantavirus. The virus, spread by rodents, has resulted in three fatalities and left a British man in critical condition.

Deadly Outbreak on the MV Hondius

The MV Hondius, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, en route to Cape Verde, Africa, when the outbreak occurred. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed six suspected cases of the virus, with three passengers succumbing to the illness.

Passengers in Limbo

A 70-year-old Dutch passenger was the first victim, followed by his 69-year-old wife. A 69-year-old British national was airlifted to Johannesburg, South Africa, for intensive care. The remaining passengers are anxiously awaiting clearance to disembark while the ship remains anchored offshore.

Cruise Line Response and Passenger Concerns

Oceanwide Expeditions acknowledged the crisis, expressing regret for the loss of life and stating their commitment to securing medical assistance and safe disembarkation for all passengers. They have urged passengers to follow strict hygiene protocols, including mask-wearing and social distancing.

However, one anonymous passenger expressed frustration with the lack of communication from the cruise line, noting that many onboard are uncertain about the current situation.

Hantavirus Details and Symptoms

Hantaviruses are carried by rodents and can cause severe respiratory illness and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Symptoms include fatigue, fever, and muscle aches, potentially leading to respiratory failure in severe cases. The WHO is conducting laboratory tests and epidemiological investigations to contain the outbreak.

The WHO emphasizes that hantavirus is not typically spread person-to-person, but through contact with rodent bodily fluids.

Signs of Improvement and Ship Details

A Turkish passenger reported on social media that an Irish friend, who received treatment in South Africa, is showing signs of improvement. The MV Hondius is a luxury vessel with 80 cabins, accommodating up to 170 passengers and 57 crew members. Voyages on the ship previously ranged in price from €12,500 to €40,000.

Passengers remain hopeful for a swift resolution and continued medical support as the situation develops.
