Passengers aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship are facing a critical situation following a hantavirus outbreak that has tragically resulted in three deaths.

Outbreak and Fatalities

A suspected hantavirus outbreak has claimed the lives of three individuals: a Dutch couple and a German national. The outbreak began during the ship’s voyage from Ushuaia, Argentina, with the first death reported on April 11th. A critically ill British man was medically evacuated to South Africa.

Cape Verde Blocks Disembarkation

The MV Hondius, carrying 149 individuals from 23 nations – including 19 British passengers and four British crew members – is currently stranded off the coast of Cape Verde. Cape Verdean authorities are refusing to allow sick passengers to disembark, citing concerns for the health of the local population.

Emotional Plea for Help

US travel blogger Jake Rosmarin issued an emotional plea for support, sharing his concerns with his 44,000 Instagram followers. Rosmarin emphasized the passengers’ desire for safety, clarity, and a return home.

Repatriation Efforts Stalled

Oceanwide Expeditions, the cruise operator, has confirmed a ‘serious medical situation’ and is collaborating with Dutch authorities to arrange repatriation for symptomatic individuals. However, these efforts are currently stalled due to the Cape Verdean government’s decision.

International Coordination Challenges

The Dutch foreign ministry has expressed willingness to facilitate transfers if authorized, but the final decision rests with Cape Verde. Permission and coordination with local health authorities are required for any disembarkation, medical evacuation, or screening.

Ongoing Uncertainty and Medical Needs

The ship has been anchored off the port of Praia, Cape Verde, for over 24 hours with no immediate resolution. Two crew members, one British and one Dutch, are currently experiencing acute respiratory symptoms and require urgent medical attention. As of Sunday night, no permission for medical disembarkation had been granted, leaving passengers and crew in a state of prolonged uncertainty.
