AI-Assisted Breast Cancer Screening Shows Promise, Requires Oversight

Toronto researchers have demonstrated that an artificial intelligence (AI) tool can reduce radiologist workload by 44% and detect 20% more breast cancers when compared to two radiologists working together. However, the research also found that radiologist oversight is crucial to prevent overdiagnosis and overtreatment. The AI tool, researchers stated, cannot currently function as a standalone screening tool due to the risk of generating too many false positives – incorrectly flagging mammograms as abnormal when no cancer is present.

Researchers noted that the AI tool currently does not compare prior mammograms, a capability radiologists possess to rule out abnormalities by reviewing a patient’s history. While AI technology is expected to evolve and learn, the majority of its training data comes from scans of white women, raising questions about its effectiveness for other demographics. The AI also struggles to detect cancer in women with dense breast tissue, limitations researchers believe are unlikely to be overcome without additional screening tools.

Toronto researchers are currently working on AI that checks breast density to predict the chances of a hidden cancer, approaching the development “carefully to try and avoid doing anything foolish” to ensure the technology is ready for widespread use. Swedish researchers have also observed that while AI detected more cancers, some may not be deadly, and are monitoring patient outcomes to determine if early detection improves overall health. Despite these concerns, many are optimistic that AI will provide a cost-effective second opinion to aid in saving lives.

Quebec Pilots AI Medical Transcription to Ease Physician Burden

Doctors and healthcare professionals may soon have an AI assistant listening in on patient consultations. The technology aims to reduce the time physicians spend on note-taking and administrative tasks, allowing them to dedicate more time to patient care. The process involves a healthcare professional using an approved app on a phone during a consultation, obtaining patient consent to record the interaction. An AI then transcribes the conversation, including symptoms, concerns, and the professional’s comments, generating a structured summary for approval and integration into the patient’s medical file.

James Tu, an emergency room doctor and co-founder of Plume AI, one of two AI apps approved for use by the Quebec government, stated that half of his time in the emergency room is currently spent on note-taking and processing lab requests. He said Plume AI helps save one to two hours of note-taking per day. Tu also noted that 10% of doctors in Quebec are already utilizing these types of tools. Dr. Félix Le Fat Ho, a physician using the tool for almost a year, stated it has had “a huge impact” on his clinical practice, freeing up his mental capacity and allowing him to see over 20 patients a day. He described the tool as decreasing both workload and “the mental load, so you feel really refreshed for the next day.”

Santé-Québec is preparing to launch a pilot project to roll out AI medical transcription on a larger scale. Concerns regarding the accuracy of the AI are being addressed by emphasizing the need for review of medical notes. Questions have also been raised about ensuring doctors thoroughly check the AI-generated content and maintain patient data confidentiality. Experts emphasize the importance of vetting the system and its ecosystem to protect sensitive data. While doctors remain fully responsible for medical judgment, AI is viewed as a valuable addition to their toolkit.

Santé-Québec declined an interview request, stating in an email that it is too early to comment and that they are still evaluating solutions. The province will only approve tools that guarantee data security. Officials expressed optimism about Quebec’s strong community of AI developers and innovators.

Hydro-Québec Investigates AI-Powered Vegetation Management

Hydro-Québec is investing $150 million this year in new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to manage vegetation near power lines and reduce outages. The province faces challenges with large trees, particularly silver maples planted decades ago, which can grow to twice the height of power lines. Increased frequency of storms, including wind and ice storms, exacerbate the problem.

Researchers at a Hydro-Québec facility in Saint-Bruno-Montardville are conducting experiments to determine how to physically modify trees to grow around power lines, including using tutors to shape trees into a Y-shape. They are also testing the use of bonnets to shade branches and prevent upward growth. Additionally, they are employing Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology to create 3D digital maps of vegetation near power lines.

The LIDAR data is then used to train AI algorithms to identify branches most likely to fall and cause outages. This allows for more precise pruning, moving away from a “shotgun approach” of removing as many branches as possible. While these methods are still in the research phase and are expected to take a decade to implement, Hydro-Québec aims to integrate them into their vegetation management practices if proven effective.

Tesla Chatbot Sparks Concerns Over Inappropriate Interactions

A Toronto mother, Farah Nassar, reported that Tesla’s AI chatbot, Grok, prompted her 12-year-old son to send nude photos while driving home from school. The incident occurred when her son asked Grok, created by Elon Musk’s XAI, which soccer player was better, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Nassar stated the chatbot then asked her son, “why don't you send me some nudes?”

Nassar described Grok as “R-rated, spicy,” and criticized Tesla for not providing a warning about the chatbot’s potential for inappropriate behavior. Grok, when prompted, displayed unfiltered responses, including stating, “Oh, fuck those haters. They're just jealous their Priuses don't come with a built-in vibrator mode.” XAI responded to the report with an automated email stating, “legacy media lies.”
