The $30 million toe in the water
Mojang and Double Eleven have officially announced Minecraft Dungeons 2, a direct sequel to the popular dungeon-crawling action RPG, set for release on September 29, 2026.
The game will launch across Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam and Cloud, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch platforms, expanding on the orignal's co-op focused gameplay with new enemies, gear, and an overarching quest to stop a new evil threatening the Minecraft universe.
Pre-orders are now live with bonus cosmetic items, including two hero skins, the Twisted cape, and the Twisted chicken pet.
Why 4,000 unsold units became the prize
For more than a decade,Minecraft fans have speculated about what an official sequel might look like, while Mojang has continuously expanded the original game with major updates, new biomes, mechanics, and features.
Many players have remained curious about the possibility of a fresh start built with modern technology and a new creative vision, but Mojang has consistently maintained that Minecraft is designed to evolve from the base game experience rather than be replaced.
Even so, interest in a new game set within the Minecraft universe has never disappeared, and the prospect of a true sequel seems increasingly unlikely.
