A new Lego Renault 5 Turbo 3E model, designed by engineer Dave Collins, is attracting significant attention from Lego enthusiasts. The project currently has over 2,000 supporters and aims to reach 10,000 signatures to be considered for production by Lego.
A Decade After Caterham Success
This initiative follows the successful Lego Caterham campaign from a decade ago. The Philippines has a strong track record of contributing Lego builds that have become commercially available products, with the Caterham model being a prime example.
Community-Driven Success
The Caterham project, created by Carl Greartrix, gained approval from Lego thanks to a dedicated campaign led by PistonHeads readers. This demonstrated the power of community support in bringing fan-designed Lego models to life.
Capturing the Iconic Design
Dave Collins’ 1:12 scale model, built over 100 hours using 1,200 pieces, accurately represents the iconic 1980s Renault 5 Turbo 3E. Collins noted that angular cars are easier to replicate with Lego bricks, making the R5 a suitable choice.
Attention to Detail
The model’s accuracy is highlighted by Renault, emphasizing the exaggerated stance, aggressive proportions, and recognizable silhouette of the R5 Turbo 3E. Collins meticulously designed the model, constantly refining it while balancing other commitments. He even manually drew the stickers in AutoCAD and printed them on adhesive sheets.
Reaching the 10,000 Signature Goal
To be considered for production, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E project requires 10,000 signatures on the Lego Ideas platform. With over 2,000 supporters already, the project needs continued support to reach its goal. The PistonHeads community is encouraged to contribute to help bring this impressive Lego creation to fruition.
