Satellite monitoring reveals that massive amounts of ice have vanished from Greenland and Antarctica since 1979. This loss, totaling 11.3 trillion metric tonnes, has already pushed global sea levels up by 3.1 centimeters.
Why warmer ocean water is driving 80% of the ice loss
An international research team led by the European Space Agency has uncovered that the majority of polar ice melt is not caused by hot air. As reported in the journal Scientific Data, approximately five-sixths of the total ice loss resulted from warmer ocean water attacking the ice sheets from below and along their edges.
The primary driver of this melting is the acceleration of glacier flows into the sea, a process known as dynamic ice loss. By combining 45 independent surveys with observations from 27 different satellites, including NASA data, the researchers were able to show that these ocean-driven processes are far more abrupt and active than the gradual melting caused by atmospheric warming alone.
The 50-meter daily retreat of Greenland's Jakobshavn glacier
The acceleration of ice discharge is becoming increasingly visible in specific regions like Greenland , where certain glacier systems are responding rapidly to changing conditions. According to Ines Otosaka, an ice scientist at Northumbria University and the study's lead author,the Jakobshavn glacier is currently retreating by as much as 50 meters every single day.
While the ice sheets remained relatively stable throughout much of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, the rate of mass loss has surged in recent decades. Otosaka noted that the trend of ice being discharged into the ocean has become especially pronounced since the 2010s, creating a clear and direct link to ongoing climate change.
The deceptive 2020–2023 pause in Antarctic melting
A temporary stabilization in Antarctic ice loss occurred between 2020 and 2023, but scientists warn this was a statistical anomaly rather than a reversal of the trend.. Eric Rignot, an ice scientist at the University of California, Irvine, explained that the apparent pause was largely due to record snowfall in East Antarctica , which temporarily offset the rapid melting occurring in the less stable West Antarctic Ice Sheet.
The researchers emphasized that this three-year hiatus was merely a "bump in the record." Recent measurements taken after 2023 indicate that the acceleration of ice loss has already resumed, reinforcing the long-term upward trend in sea-level contribution.
The "wild card" of Antarctic mass loss and human response
The human consequences of continued sea-level rise are becoming increasingly quantifiable, with Ines Otosaka noting that every additional centimeter of rise could flood an additional 2 million to 3 million people annually. However, significant uncertainty remains regarding the long-term stability of the Antarctic ice sheet, which many experts describe as a "wild card" for global management.
Ted Scambos, an ice scientist at the University of Colorado, highlighted a critical gap between scientific understanding and political action. While the study provides high confidence in the upward trend of ice loss, Scambos argued that society is currently smart enough to understand the comng dangers but has not yet acted with the prudence required to mitigate them.
