BC Hydro is advising British Columbia residents to prepare for a potentially longer and more challenging wildfire season due to El Niño conditions. The weather pattern is contributing to drier landscapes and increased wildfire risk across the province.

A recent survey commissioned by BC Hydro reveals a concerning gap between residents’ perceived readiness for power outages and their actual level of preparedness for wildfires. While many believe they are equipped to handle electricity disruptions, significant gaps exist in overall wildfire readiness.

Survey Findings Highlight Preparedness Gaps

The survey data indicates that 61 percent of respondents do not have a comprehensive emergency plan in place. Furthermore, 56 percent do not possess a readily available emergency kit. This lack of planning contributes to apprehension, with one-third of respondents stating they don’t feel prepared for a power outage lasting a day or longer due to wildfire activity.

Additionally, 42 percent of respondents are unsure if their area faces an elevated wildfire threat, and 43 percent haven’t taken proactive steps to mitigate risk on their properties.

BC Hydro’s Response and Recommendations

BC Hydro is reinforcing its infrastructure and collaborating with emergency management partners to improve response capabilities. However, the agency stresses that individual preparedness is equally crucial.

Essential Preparedness Steps

Susie Rieder, a spokesperson for BC Hydro, emphasized the importance of assembling a well-stocked emergency kit with food, water, first-aid, and a battery-powered radio. Developing a family emergency plan outlining communication, evacuation routes, and meeting points is also vital.

During extended power outages, BC Hydro recommends unplugging sensitive electronics to protect against surges. Residents should also familiarize themselves with their home’s main electrical switch for safe disconnection during evacuations.
