Organisers of the Whitby Goth Weekend have implemented strict guidelines prohibiting prop swords, fake guns, and other potentially dangerous items to prevent accidents and ensure public safety during the annual festival.

Whitby Goth Weekend Safety Measures

The annual Whitby Goth Weekend, a popular gathering for goths and steampunks, is scheduled to take place from May 1–3. To ensure the well-being of attendees and residents, organizers have issued clear instructions regarding prohibited items.

Prop Weapon Ban

Attendees have been asked to leave prop swords, fake guns, and even water pistols at home. Authorities are concerned these items could contribute to a serious incident. Whitby’s isolated location, with the nearest A&E and police station 45 minutes away, increases the potential consequences of any serious event.

The ban particularly affects the Steampunk community, known for incorporating modified Nerf guns and intricate metal blades into their Victorian-inspired costumes.

List of Prohibited Items

A comprehensive list of prohibited items now includes imitation firearms made of metal, resin, plastic, wood, or rubber. Also banned are actual firearms, slingshots, bows, projectile weapons, live steel (swords and knives), heavy bats, paddles, clubs, bokken, explosives, incendiary devices, laser pointers, and gas canisters.

Attendees are encouraged to replace heavier props with alternatives made of foam, cardboard, or foam board.

Past Concerns and Event History

This weapon ban is the latest in a series of restrictions aimed at managing the large number of visitors. The festival has experienced tension with local authorities in the past.

In 2011, the rector of St Mary's Church prohibited Goths from the graveyard after reports of visitors posing for photos with historic headstones. Further concerns about tombstone damage in 2016 led to a proposal for a dedicated mock graveyard for photographs.

Organizers' Statement

Organisers emphasize that the new rules are not intended to exclude the Steampunk community, but are a necessary step to manage insurance costs and ensure the festival’s future. A spokesperson stated: “This decision was not taken lightly,” adding that the primary goal is to maintain a safe environment for attendees and local residents.

Despite the restrictions, the festival is expected to be a vibrant celebration of gothic and steampunk culture, attracting thousands of attendees and showcasing unique styles.
