Shakira to Perform Massive Free Concert in Rio
Preparations Underway for Copacabana Beach Show
Colombian singer Shakira is preparing to perform a free concert on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro this Saturday night. City officials anticipate approximately two million attendees, potentially making it the largest concert of her career.
“It has always been a dream to perform on Copacabana beach,” Shakira stated, emphasizing her long-standing connection with Brazil and its culture. Brazil was among the first countries to embrace her music in the 1990s.
Economic Impact and Tourism Boost
Crowds have already begun gathering on the beach, securing viewing spots and supporting local vendors. The concert is scheduled to begin at 9:45 p.m. local time and last approximately two hours, with DJs performing before and after Shakira’s set.
Rio de Janeiro officials view the concert as a significant economic driver, aiming to boost activity following Carnival and New Year’s Eve. Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere highlighted the importance of events in generating jobs, income, and a sense of identity for the city.
Studies estimate the concert could generate around 777 million reais (approximately $155 million) through tourism and increased spending. Data shows a substantial increase in tourism to Rio in May during years with major concerts, with growth rates of 34.2% in 2024 and 90.5% in 2025 compared to 2023.
Airbnb has reported a surge in bookings from both domestic and international travelers, including those from Europe. The event is being carefully managed to ensure a safe and orderly experience for attendees.
