British television personalities Vernon Kay and Tess Daly have announced their separation after 22 years together. The couple, who have been a staple in the entertainment industry, revealed their decision in a joint statement on Friday, emphasizing their mutual respect and commitment to co-parenting their daughters, Phoebe, 21, and Amber, 16.
Longtime Relationship and Marriage
Kay and Daly began dating in 2001 after meeting on a work project. Kay proposed to Daly on Christmas Day the following year, and they tied the knot in September 2002 in Horwich, near Kay's hometown in Lancashire. Reflecting on their first meeting, Kay told The Telegraph, "She didn't know anyone except me because we'd worked together that day – she spotted me in a crowd and we had a laugh. I was instantly attracted by how independent Tess was, and that's not changed at all."
Living Separate Lives Before Split
According to a source close to the couple, Kay and Daly had been living separate lives before their official split. The source told Daily Mail's Katie Hind, "Basically, without meaning to, they’ve been living separate lives. They don’t really do much together anymore, they have different interests and hobbies. They had grown apart. They acknowledged that and decided that life would be better if they were to split."
Joint Statement and Future Plans
In their joint statement, the couple expressed their decision to separate amicably. They wrote, "After much consideration, and with a deep sense of care and respect for one another, we have made the decision to separate amicably. This has not been an easy choice, but it comes from a place of mutual understanding and a shared desire of what is best for both of us."
The couple also emphasized their commitment to their roles as parents, stating, "We remain great friends and, most importantly, fully committed to our roles as loving and supportive parents, which will always be our priority."
Kay and Daly have requested privacy during this time and have stated that they will not be making any further public comments on the matter.
