Former Real Housewives of New York City star Leah McSweeney has concluded her legal dispute with Andy Cohen and Bravo. The dismissal, filed this past Friday, was made with prejudice following a confidential settlement.
Bravo sidsteps its first courtroom trial with a cast member
The settlement prevents Bravo from facing its first-ever courtroom trial involving a former cast member. Had the case proceeded, it would have likely provided a public window into the production standards and executive pressures within the Real Housewives franchise.
This legal resolution follows a March 2025 ruling by Judge Lewis J. Liman, which allowed only certain parts of the lawsuit to move forward. By settling now, the network avoids the unpredictability of a public trial that could have set a significant precedent for reality television litigatoin.
The 2024 claims regarding sobriety and ratings-driven drinking
The legal dispute, which began in February 2024, centered on McSweeney's allegation that Bravo executives pressured her to drink. According to legal filings reviewed by Page Six, the lawsuit claimed the network and its leadership encouraged her to resume alcohol use to create the "signature melodrama" required to boost viewership.
McSweeney, who had been sober for a decade prior to her time on the show, alleged that this pressure directly contributed to her relapse. While Bravo and Andy Cohen have denied these allegations, the lawsuit sought damages for the impact this environment had on her personal health and sobriety.
Allegations of a 'loyalty test' involving 20 Bravo stars
More than 20 members of the Real Housewives franchise were implicated in the legal filings, including Luann de Lesseps, Kyle Richards, and Melissa Gorga. The lawsuit alleged that Andy Cohen used his position as an executive producer to induce these stars to publicly disparage McSweeney's character.
The filing suggested that these cast members, such as Kandi Burruss and Dorinda Medley, spread lies to curry favor with Cohen in hopes of advancing their own entertainment careers. this alleged pattern of behavior was framed as a direct response to McSweeney's initial legal filing.
The undisclosed dollar amount of the settlement
The specific financial terms of the agreement between McSweeney and the network remain unknown. While McSweeney's attorney, Gary Adelman of Adelman Matz, told Deadline that his client was "extremely satisfied" with the resolution, the actual dollar amount has not been disclosed.
Because the settlement is confidential, several questions remain regarding the true cost of the resolution.. It is unclear if the payout was intended to cover specific damages or if it serves as a broadeer release of all potential claims against Cohen and the network.
