The Spice Girls are reportedly considering an Abba-style hologram show to celebrate their 30th anniversary after plans for a reunion tour were scrapped. The band members have discussed the possibility of becoming digital avatars, following the success of ABBA Voyage.
Reunion Tour Falls Through
The iconic Spice Girls – comprised of Mel B, Geri Horner, Mel C, Emma Bunton, and Victoria Beckham – are exploring a groundbreaking new way to celebrate their 30th anniversary following the cancellation of planned reunion concerts. Talks had been ongoing for a series of concerts to commemorate three decades since the release of their debut single, ‘Wannabe,’ but ultimately fell through due to disagreements among the band members.
Inspired by ABBA Voyage
This innovative concept would see the Spice Girls transformed into digital avatars, allowing them to perform and connect with fans in a completely new and immersive way. The idea gained traction after the success of ABBA Voyage, launched in 2022, which revolutionized the concert experience by presenting the Swedish pop group as digital representations of their younger selves.
Victoria Beckham's Support
Victoria Beckham herself expressed enthusiasm for the idea during a recent appearance on SiriusXM radio, stating that the principle behind it was ‘great’ and that the band had been discussing it during a dinner conversation.
Simon Fuller's Involvement
Simon Fuller, the band’s former manager and the mastermind behind ABBA Voyage, is reportedly championing the hologram project. A source revealed to The Sun that Fuller is ‘desperate to have one last hurrah with the Spice Girls’ and believes this model is the perfect solution. He recognizes the financial benefits, noting it would allow the band to generate income passively while introducing their music to a new generation.
A Legacy of Success
The Spice Girls burst onto the scene in 1996 with ‘Wannabe,’ which topped the charts in 37 countries, and went on to achieve nine number-one singles and two number-one albums in the UK. However, the group’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges, including Geri Horner’s departure in 1998.
Past Reunions and Recent Activity
While the band has reunited sporadically over the years, including a performance at the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony and a world tour in 2007-08, a full-scale, permanent reunion has proven elusive. Mel B and Mel C recently sparked excitement with a mini-reunion, performing Spice Girls hits on stage for the first time since 2019.
Commemorative Efforts
Currently, the only official announcement to mark the 30th anniversary is a commemorative coin released by the Royal Mint. The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for the Spice Girls for comment, but has not yet received a response.
