Slipknot percussionist Shawn 'Clown' Crahan has revealed he will undergo heart surgery after being diagnosed with a cardiac condition. The musician discovered the issue following the band's recent tour when he sought medical attention for not feeling well.
Diagnosis and Symptoms
Crahan, Slipknot's sole remaining founding member, explained that doctors found an issue with his heart's electrical system during a medical examination. "I have a skipping heart and I got to get a surgery," he told interviewer Rubin. The condition causes his heart rate to drop significantly, leaving him feeling unwell.
"My standing heart rate at night is 43 and during the day I get down to 33," he said. "I'll go from 'on,' to just straight up I feel like I'm dying."
Treatment and Recovery
The surgery is described as a straightforward procedure with minimal recovery time. "You're usually out on the same day," Crahan noted. "It's not like they rip you open. This is something about the electricity."
Initially, Crahan joked about the possibility of needing a pacemaker as a way out of touring, but his doctor assured him that the surgery would likely improve his condition. "I just lost it. I was like, I can't get out of this to save my life," he joked.
Access to Specialized Care
Thanks to his career with Slipknot, Crahan now has access to specialized medical care. Doctors expect him to feel better and improve his fitness after the surgery. "I got a concierge doctor because I'm in Slipknot and I'm able to go to levels and they're like, 'No, you're going to feel better. You better get in shape because you got to do more now at 56,'" he said.
Crahan expressed gratitude for his situation, saying, "I'm lucky."
