Simone Callahan has opened up about the devastating moment she learned that cricket icon Shane Warne had passed away. Speaking with raw honesty on the Warnes Way podcast, hosted by her son Jackson, Simone described the "surreal horror" of the events that unfolded in March 2022.

The Night the News Broke

At the time of the tragedy, Simone was in the coastal town of Somers, located an hour outside of Melbourne. She was on her way home to collect her daughter, Summer, when she began receiving a series of alarming messages.

"It didn't feel real," Simone told Jackson. She recalled that they were having a normal Friday night before the situation shifted rapidly.

Simone noted that a specific message asking if she was nearly home with Summer signaled a grim reality. She realized the family was being gathered together for a devastating phone call, stating, "Our lives were changed forever in that moment."

The Burden on the Children

In the chaotic weeks following the death, the world mourned one of Australia's greatest sporting figures. Meanwhile, Warne's children—Brooke, Jackson, and Summer—were thrust into the center of the storm.

The children were tasked with organizing a memorial and funeral while struggling to manage their own grief. Simone admitted that much of this period remains a blur for her.

A Mother's Guilt

Simone expressed a deep sense of guilt over the pressure placed on her children. She told Jackson that it was difficult to watch them be pulled in different directions during such a heavy time.

"I was so proud of the way you guys handled yourselves," she said, noting that the children did not have a moment to truly grieve while managing the public arrangements.

Jackson Warne's Journey Through Grief

For Jackson, the drive to make his father proud provided strength during his darkest days. He described a sense of duty to continue his father's legacy.

Despite the passage of time—which the interview notes as four years on—Jackson admitted that the full weight of his grief has not yet surfaced. He mentioned that neither he nor his father were "big criers," and he has yet to experience a major emotional release.

The Legacy of the 'King of Spin'

Shane Warne died of a heart attack on March 4, 2022, at the age of 52. He was staying at a luxury villa in the resort of Koh Samui, Thailand, where he was found unconscious.

Widely regarded as one of the finest cricketers in history, Warne claimed 708 Test wickets in 145 matches between 1992 and 2007. Following his legendary playing career, he became a successful businessman and pundit.
