Sara Cox will take over as the host of the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show, succeeding Scott Mills. The BBC confirmed Mills’ departure after allegations of serious sexual offences surfaced.
Scott Mills' Departure
Scott Mills was dismissed last month following the resurfacing of allegations concerning serious sexual offences against a teenage boy under 16. The alleged incidents occurred between 1997 and 2000, when Mills was in his mid-20s.
The allegations were initially investigated in 2018, but the Crown Prosecution Service did not pursue the case due to insufficient evidence. The BBC was reportedly aware of these allegations as early as 2017.
Sara Cox's Appointment
Currently hosting the weekday Teatime show from 4pm to 7pm, Sara Cox expressed her “immense excitement and honour” at being chosen to host the Breakfast Show, calling it a long-held dream. She plans to bring her blend of music, humor, and engaging guests to the program.
BBC Support for Cox
Helen Thomas, Head of Radio 2, praised Cox’s popularity and her ability to connect with audiences. Thomas also highlighted Cox’s successful deputizing on the Breakfast Show and her fundraising efforts for Children in Need, where she raised £11.5 million through the Great Northern Marathon Challenge.
Mills' Response and Support
Scott Mills released a statement confirming the allegations and his full cooperation with the 2018 police investigation. He did not address the specifics of the accusations but expressed gratitude for the support he has received.
Sources close to Mills describe him as a kind individual and express concern for his mental wellbeing. His husband, Sam, is reportedly providing support during this difficult time.
Looking Ahead
The BBC acknowledged the shock and surprise caused by Mills’ departure. A search is underway to find a replacement for Cox’s Teatime slot. Cox’s appointment marks a fresh start for the Breakfast Show, and she is eager to begin.
