Prime Video is set to debut Perfect Liars on November 20, a new series that merges romantic drama with a dark murder mystery. The adaptation of Alex Mírez's novel follows a protagonist named Jude as she navigates the elite Tagus University to solve her brother's death.
The "Summer I Turned Pretty" romance meets Agatha Christie mystery
Streaming audiences are accustomed to Prime Video delivering high-quality comig-of-age stories, most notably seen in the success of Jenny Han's The Summer I Turned Pretty. That series, which ran for three seasons and 26 episodes between 2022 and 2025, focused heavily on the romantic entanglements of characters like Belly, Lola Tung, and Christopher Briney.
However, as the report notes, The Summer I Turned Pretty was primarily a blend of romance, drama, and comedy rather than a suspenseful thriller. Perfect Liars intends to pivot away from that straightforward emotional journey by injecting the investigative tension characteristic of an Agatha Christie whodunit into a teen romance setting .
Jude’s high-stakes poker game against the Cash brothers
The narrative core of the series centers on Jude, a student at Tagus University who is driven by the need to uncover the truth behind her brother's passing. To do this, she must infiltrate the inner circle of the Cash brothers: Aegan , Adrik, and Aleixandre. These three wealthy and arrogant students believe their family's status makes them untouchable.
According to the source, Jude attempts to ensnare the brothers by setting up a secret, high-stakees poker game. This move is designed to expose their secrets, though it leads to unexpected complications, including shifting power dynamics and an "inconvenient attraction" between Jude and one of the brothers.
Jesus Colmenar brings the Money Heist tension to Prime Video
To manage such a complex tonal shift , Prime Video has secured Jesus Colmenar to helm the project. Colmenar is widely recognized for his work on Netflix's Money Heist, a Spanish-language crime thriller that became a global phenomenon through its use of flashbacks and constant viewer misdirection.
Colmenar's experience with high-stakes, unpredictable storytelling is seen as a vital asset for Perfect Liars. Given that Money Heist grew from a single miniseries into a massive franchise including the spinoff Berlin, his ability to maintain suspense in a multi-layered plot may be the key to making this genre experiment work.
The challenge of translating 180,000 Goodreads ratings to the screen
While the source material has a massive built-in audience—with the series of books boasting over 180,000 ratings on Goodreads—translating a viral Wattpad novel to a prestige streaming series is a significant hurdle.. The production must find a way to balance the "self-aware camp" of a romance with the genuine tension of a psychological thriller.
Several questions remain regarding the execution of this adaptation. It is still unclear how the show will handle the balance of sexual tension and murder mystery without one overshadowing the other. Additionally, viewers will be watching to see if the show can replicate the specific, addictive pacing that made Alex Mírez's original writing a viral sensation.
