The 58-year-old comedian and actor confirmed the incident on social media, sharing a heartfelt message from his hospital bed at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. King revealed he experienced the spinal stroke on Sunday, initially losing the ability to move.

He expressed gratitude for the swift and exceptional care of the medical staff, noting he can now walk again, though with some difficulty. He jokingly described his legs as feeling like “jelly” but remained upbeat.

Support from Co-Stars and Fans

King’s Peep Show co-star, Vera Graziadei (Elena), took to Instagram to rally support, urging fans to send prayers and positive energy. The response was immediate, with many praising King’s resilience and humor.

Fans shared well-wishes and referenced his character, Super Hans, with playful remarks. One fan commented on his ability to joke about the situation, calling him an inspiration.

From Stand-Up to Super Hans

King’s journey to fame began long before Peep Show. He transitioned into stand-up comedy after encouragement from comedian Jimeoin McKeown, following a career as a chef in Australia.

After 15 years of performing, he was discovered by the creators of Peep Show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The role of Super Hans was initially intended for Danny Dyer, but King’s unique energy and comedic timing proved a perfect fit.

Beyond Peep Show

King’s portrayal of the chaotic character became a fan favorite, leading to roles in Skins, Doctor Who, Spirited, Paddington, and The End of the F***ing World. He also created and wrote his own sitcom, Whites, starring Alan Davies.

In 2019, he appeared in Sam Fender’s music video for “Saturday,” delivering an interpretative dance routine. He has also admitted to often forgetting lines from Peep Show.

Understanding Spinal Strokes

A spinal stroke, or spinal cord infarction, is a rare and serious condition caused by disrupted blood flow to the spinal cord. Unlike brain strokes, spinal strokes can lead to paralysis, loss of sensation, and other neurological deficits.

Ischemic strokes, caused by blocked blood vessels (80% of cases), and hemorrhagic strokes, caused by burst blood vessels, are the two main types. Risk factors include age, high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Symptoms can include sudden numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, and loss of coordination. Recovery often requires long-term rehabilitation, and outcomes vary.
