The $2.5 billion gamble on a time skip

The live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres on Netflix later this month, nearly two and a half years after the first season.. The show's executive producers, Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan, have explained the necessity of a time skip in the show's next season, which allows for certain events depicted in the original animated series to occur offscreen in this live-action continuity.

Unlike the animated series, which followed the characters unitnerrupted, the live-action version has taken a significant creative liberty by introducing a time gap between seasons 1 and 2. This time jump is necessary to account for the younger actors, particularly Gordon Cormier, who plays Aang, and Kiawentiio, who plays Katara, looking noticeably older.

A time gap of unknown length

The exact amount of time that has passed between the season 1 finale and the season 2 preiere is not specified, but it is clear that a significant amount of time has passed. The time jump also allows for certain events depicted in the original animated series to occur offscreen in this live-action continuity.

Boylan stated that there are many adventures that exist in the animated series that couldn't be included in the show, and the time jump allows for these events to happen offscreen. The time jump is also necessary to account for the aging of the younger actors , whereas it wouldn't be as much of a concern with their older co-stars.

A new cast of characters

The season 2 premeire features the introduction of Miya Chech as the earthbender Toph Beifong, as well as the young protagonists visiting Ba Sing Se, the Earth Kingdom's capital. Other actors appearing in season 2 include Chin Han, Rekha Sharma, Lily Gao, and Dichen Lachman.

What's still unknown

The show's final season, season 3, will not feature a time jump for the same reason, but rather for creative reasons. The season 3 release window has not been revealed yet. The show's creators have taken various creative liberties from the original animated series, including the time jump, to create a unique live-action adaptation.
