The beloved BBC series Monarch of the Glen is set for a reboot, bringing a fresh perspective to the story with a female protagonist. The new series will air on Channel 5 and feature an entirely new cast.

A New Laird: Isla Campbell's Challenge

The reboot will follow Isla Campbell, a London lawyer, as she unexpectedly inherits her family’s financially troubled estate in the Scottish Highlands. Returning for her father’s funeral, Isla discovers she’s responsible for a million-pound debt and faces the threat of losing the property.

From London to the Highlands

Isla will be forced to collaborate with her brother to save the estate from financial ruin. The series promises to blend family drama with the stunning backdrop of the Scottish Highlands, much like the original.

The Legacy of *Monarch of the Glen*

The original Monarch of the Glen, which aired from 2000 to 2005, captivated audiences for six seasons and 64 episodes. It followed Archie MacDonald’s journey to restore his family estate, later shifting focus to Laird Paul Bowman’s modernization efforts.

Inspired by Classic Literature

Loosely based on Sir Compton Mackenzie’s Highland Novels, the original series starred Alastair MacKenzie and Dawn Steele. It became a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its blend of drama, humor, and breathtaking scenery.

Behind the Scenes of the Reboot

Writer Jeremy Brock, known for his work on A Very Royal Scandal, expressed his excitement about reimagining the series. He stated, “I’m hugely excited by the opportunity to tell a story of family life and finding your place in our hectic world—one that celebrates the warmth, humor, and eccentricities of a special community, with both optimism and authenticity.”

Filming Locations and Production

Production is scheduled to begin later this year in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The iconic castle featured in the original series will also be used as a filming location, having previously served as Balmoral Estate for Netflix’s The Crown. Last year, original stars Alastair MacKenzie and Dawn Steele reunited to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary.
