The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to dominate the box office for the third consecutive week, as industry analysts assess the performance of recent releases.
Mario's Continued Success
The Universal Pictures production added another $35 million to its total during its third weekend in the top spot. This brings the film’s staggering worldwide gross to $747.5 million. The enduring appeal of the franchise is clearly resonating with audiences.
Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, who previously worked together on Going the Distance, have been actively promoting the film and engaging with fan theories online.
Project Hail Mary's Staying Power
Project Hail Mary is also demonstrating remarkable staying power in theaters. In its fifth weekend, the Amazon MGM film experienced a minimal drop of only 15 percent, earning $20.5 million.
Its domestic earnings now total $285.1 million, with a global reach of $573.1 million. A return to IMAX screens helped boost the film’s performance, solidifying its position as the year’s highest-earning original film.
Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Ryan Gosling recently celebrated the film’s success at CinemaCon, thanking theater owners for their support.
Mixed Results for New Releases
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy debuted with $13.5 million in over 3,400 locations, but received a lukewarm response from critics and audiences. The film currently holds a 45 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and a C+ CinemaScore.
Despite a modest production budget of $22 million, its critical reception suggests it may struggle to maintain momentum. Other new releases, including the Bob Odenkirk action film Normal, also experienced mixed results.
Industry Outlook
Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted that while the horror genre had a strong year in 2025, 2026 has yet to see the same level of success. However, the overall box office is currently 16 percent higher than it was at this time last year.
Anticipation is building for the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, which is projected to potentially break records for the musical genre.
