The sequel to the 2020 disaster film Greenland, titled Greenland: Migration, will be available to stream on HBO Max starting May 8, 2026, following a less-than-successful run in movie theaters.
Film's Theatrical Performance
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Greenland: Migration first premiered in Austria on January 6th before launching in United States cinemas on January 9th. Despite anticipation for the continuation of the story following the comet Clarke’s impact, the film earned approximately $44.8 million worldwide.
This result is considerably lower than the original Greenland, which grossed around $52.3 million globally, despite a smaller production budget. Greenland: Migration had a production budget of $90 million.
Story and Cast
The film follows the Garrity family as they search for a new home, embarking on a perilous journey across Europe after finding temporary safety in a Greenland bunker. Gerard Butler returns as John Garrity, alongside Morena Baccarin, Roman Griffin Davis, Tommie Earl Jenkins, Amber Rose Revah, and Sophie Thompson.
A Continued Collaboration
This marks the fourth collaboration between Butler and Waugh, following their previous work on Greenland, Kandahar (2023), and Angel Has Fallen (2019). The screenplay was written by Mitchell LaFortune and Chris Sparling, with Sparling returning from the first film.
Production Details and Industry Trends
Butler also served as a co-producer alongside Waugh, John Zois, Sébastien Raybaud, Erica Lee, Basil Iwanyk, Alan Siegel, and Brendon Boyea. While critical reception was mixed, Butler’s performance received positive attention.
The film’s box office struggles reflect a broader trend of action and disaster films facing challenges in theaters, as streaming platforms gain popularity. This shift in distribution aims to reach a wider audience through HBO Max.
Greenland: Migration joins a growing number of recent releases finding new audiences on streaming services, including films from Sony Pictures Classics, Focus Features, Universal Pictures, Blumhouse, and Paramount+.
