Gorka Marquez has confirmed he is leaving Strictly Come Dancing after a decade with the program. The Spanish professional dancer, 35, cited scheduling conflicts and a desire to explore new opportunities as reasons for his departure.
Departure Amidst Cast Changes
Marquez’s announcement follows a series of cast changes as producers aim to refresh the show’s lineup and attract a younger audience. He is the latest professional to depart, joining Luba Mushtuk, Karen Hauer, Nadiya Bychkova, and Michelle Tsiakkas.
Scheduling Conflicts and Future Plans
The dancer revealed his decision on Instagram, explaining that commitments to Dancing With The Stars Spain played a significant role. Despite stepping down as a full-time dancer, Marquez expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Strictly Pro Tour and hopes to contribute as a judge in the future.
A Decade of Memories
Marquez shared his immense gratitude for his ten years on Strictly, highlighting the opportunities it provided him to build a career, find love with his fiancée Gemma Atkinson, start a family, and forge lasting friendships.
Focus on a Younger Demographic
Producers are also searching for new hosts to succeed Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly after the 2025 Christmas Special. The show is reportedly prioritizing a 'fresh start,' seeking presenters with strong online presences, particularly on platforms like TikTok, to attract a younger demographic.
This strategy is reflected in dancer retention, with those possessing larger social media followings, such as Dianne Buswell, being kept on while others, like Nadiya Bychkova and Karen Hauer, have been let go.
Changes to 'It Takes Two'
Reports also suggest potential departures for Fleur East and Janette Manrara from the show’s spin-off, It Takes Two, as part of a larger revamp prompted by recent controversies surrounding the franchise. Manrara has hosted It Takes Two since 2021, with East joining in 2023.
