Actress Evan Rachel Wood has recounted her experiences of alleged abuse by former fiancé Marilyn Manson, detailing the emotional toll and the challenges of speaking out.
Manson Drops Defamation Suit
Marilyn Manson, whose legal name is Brian Hugh Warner, dropped a defamation lawsuit against Wood and agreed to cover her $327,000 legal fees following a court order in 2024. He had initially filed the suit alleging a conspiracy to damage his reputation.
Wood Details Alleged Emotional and Psychological Abuse
Evan Rachel Wood, now 38, has publicly detailed the emotional and psychological impact of alleged abuse suffered during her relationship with Manson, which spanned from 2006 to 2010. She described feeling a profound sense of guilt and confusion, believing she somehow deserved the treatment she received.
Initial Accusations and Challenges
Wood initially came forward with accusations of sexual assault and emotional abuse in 2021, but was unable to pursue legal charges at the time. She recounted how Manson initially made her feel ‘seen’ before allegedly exploiting her vulnerabilities and loneliness.
Allegations of a Controlling Environment
Wood described the environment surrounding Manson as operating like a ‘cult,’ making it exceptionally difficult to leave the relationship and frightening to speak out. She highlighted the challenges faced by survivors of abuse, comparing them to the difficulties in proving cases like those detailed in the Epstein Files.
Shared Experiences of Survivors
Wood emphasized the shared experience among survivors, stating that her story resonated with many others who had faced similar struggles with guilt, confusion, and the fear of not being believed.
Legal Developments and Additional Accusations
Prior to the release of her HBO documentary, Phoenix Rising: Don't Fall, Manson filed a lawsuit against Wood in March 2022. Following the documentary’s airing, more than 12 women, including Esme Bianco and Ashley Walters, came forward with similar accusations against Manson.
Reopened Sexual Assault Case
In January 2024, a Los Angeles judge reopened a sexual assault case against Manson under a new law allowing for the prosecution of older sexual assault cases. The case, initially filed in May 2021 by former assistant Ashley Walters, had been dismissed due to the statute of limitations but was reinstated by Judge Steve Cochran. Walters alleges sexual assault and disturbing statements made by Manson regarding past abuse.
Manson's Statement and Legal Team Response
Manson’s lawyer, Howard King, stated in November 2024 that Manson was ‘pleased to dismiss his still-pending claims and appeal in order to close the door on this chapter of his life’ after a four-year legal battle. Wood’s legal team characterized Manson’s initial lawsuit as a tactic to discredit his accusers and revive his career, asserting that the court found his claims to be without merit.
The Daily Mail has reached out to Manson’s representative for comment.
