CBS is making a significant change to its late-night programming, replacing a current show with a comedy block featuring Comics Unleashed and Funny You Should Ask, both produced by Byron Allen.

Programming Shift Announced

The long-running late-night program will air its final episode on May 21. Immediately following, the 11:35 p.m. timeslot will be filled with two half-hour installments of Comics Unleashed. This represents a notable alteration to the network’s late-night lineup.

About Comics Unleashed

Comics Unleashed originally aired for over 200 episodes between 2006 and 2016. The show is a stand-up comedy showcase featuring both established and emerging comedians. It provides a platform for diverse comedic voices.

Allen's Vision for Late Night

Byron Allen, the creator of Comics Unleashed, expressed his excitement about the project. He emphasized the importance of laughter and entertainment for viewers. “I created and launched Comics Unleashed 20 years ago so fellow comedians could have a platform to do what they love – make people laugh,” Allen stated.

Allen previously leased time from CBS to air episodes of his comedy game show, establishing a working relationship. This new move expands Allen’s presence in late night through a time slot lease from CBS.

Focus on Family-Friendly Humor

The programming change reflects a desire to offer a lighter, more universally appealing alternative to the political humor prevalent in many late-night shows. Allen believes this format will be both family-friendly and attractive to advertisers.

“I truly appreciate CBS’s confidence in me by picking up the two-hour comedy block of Comics Unleashed and Funny You Should Ask, because the world can never have enough laughter,” Allen added. The new initiative aims to attract a broader demographic with evergreen comedic content.

Strategic Network Decision

This shift underscores the evolving landscape of late-night television and the need to adapt to changing audience preferences. The network’s decision signals a diversification of its programming and a commitment to providing varied entertainment options.
