The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival faced significant financial penalties due to artists exceeding the event’s strict curfew regulations. These fines, totaling $168,000 for the 2024 event, will contribute to Indio’s General Fund.
Coachella’s Long-Standing Agreement with Indio
Founded in 1999 by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen, Coachella is organized by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Worldwide. The festival operates under a contract with the city of Indio, California, where it’s held annually at the Empire Polo Club.
The current agreement, signed in 2013 and extending through 2050, requires performances to end by 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and midnight on Sundays. Violations result in fines, starting at $20,000 for the first five minutes and then $1,000 per additional minute.
Fines Accumulate During 2024 Event
The fines collected directly benefit Indio, supporting public works, police, and fire departments. The system replaced a previous contract with a simpler $1,000 per minute fine.
During the first weekend of the 2024 festival, fines reached $117,000, with an additional $51,000 assessed during the second weekend.
Bieber’s Dedication to Eilish
Justin Bieber’s performance incurred a $20,000 fine for exceeding the allotted time. However, his set included a special moment dedicated to Billie Eilish.
Bieber invited Eilish onstage for a karaoke-style rendition of one of his earlier hits, recreating a tradition from his early touring days. Eilish embraced Bieber after the performance, which was widely praised by attendees and shared on social media.
Other Curfew Violations
The Killers previously faced fines for playing an extra 30 minutes. In another instance, organizers halted The Cure’s set mid-song after 12:30 a.m.
Indio Police Commander Ben Guitron confirmed police enforcement of the curfew, emphasizing that shutdowns were carried out without physical intervention.
Balancing Artistic Expression and Regulations
The fines highlight the balance between artistic expression and logistical constraints at large-scale events. Coachella’s continued success depends on maintaining a positive relationship with Indio and respecting local regulations.
The incident with Bieber and Eilish demonstrates the power of music to create meaningful connections, and Bieber acknowledged Eilish’s potential on Instagram. The collected fines are reinvested into the community, supporting vital services.
