Amanda Mealing, the actress recognized for her work on the BBC medical drama Casualty, has publicly discussed the events leading up to her car crash in January 2024. She attributes her actions to the intense emotional distress caused by the breakdown of her nearly three-decade marriage.
Crash and Aftermath
The 59-year-old actress experienced professional repercussions, including a decrease in work, after colliding with another vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. Court proceedings revealed the significant stress stemming from her divorce from screenwriter and film producer Richard Sainsbury, with whom she shares two adult sons, played a key role.
A Difficult Separation
Mealing and Sainsbury separated last year but continued to live together for several months, a period she described as her ‘worst year ever.’ She detailed the bitterness of the divorce, accusing her ex-husband of ‘monstrous’ and ‘narcissistic’ behavior and a lack of support following the accident. Despite facing financial hardship as a result of the separation, she expressed a sense of happiness now that Sainsbury has moved out.
Seeking Support and Rebuilding
Following the crash, Mealing temporarily moved to London to stay with celebrity chef Andi Oliver, a close friend and godmother to TV presenter Miquita Oliver. She is now rebuilding her life with the support of friends who have moved in with her and are assisting with transportation, as she is currently banned from driving until mid-January 2027.
Personal Struggles
The court also learned that Mealing turned to cocaine as a coping mechanism during the divorce, exacerbated by the recent deaths of her father, a close friend, and her dog. She also received a diagnosis of blood cancer, following a previous battle with breast cancer. Despite these health challenges, Mealing remains optimistic, stating she is ‘happy now’ and her health is improving.
The Collision
The crash involved a collision with a Skoda driven by Mark Le Sage, a theatre nurse, who reported Mealing’s vehicle appeared ‘out of nowhere.’ Mealing expressed gratitude for the support of her friends, emphasizing the importance of both family of origin and chosen family, and is looking forward to a positive future. She is currently focused on preserving their shared property, a historic building she intends to restore.
