Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have settled their two-year legal dispute regarding the film It Ends With Us, successfully averting a trial that was set to begin on May 18th.

Legal Dispute Origins

The lawsuit, initially filed in December 2024, involved allegations of retaliation and breach of contract stemming from their 2024 collaboration on It Ends With Us. Lively initially sought millions in damages.

Settlement Details & Joint Statement

A joint statement released by both parties highlighted the importance of the film as a source of pride and its dedication to raising awareness for domestic violence survivors. They acknowledged the challenges encountered during the legal process and affirmed the need to address Lively’s concerns.

Notably, the statement did not include an apology from either side. The settlement brings an end to a contentious legal battle.

Narrowed Claims & Dismissed Counterclaims

Last month, a judge significantly reduced Lively’s claims, dismissing ten of her thirteen original allegations, including all accusations of sexual harassment. The trial was narrowed to three counts: retaliation, aiding and abetting retaliation, and breach of contract.

Baldoni was removed as a defendant, with Wayfarer Studios, It Ends With Us Movie LLC, and TAG PR remaining as parties facing trial for an alleged ‘smear campaign’ against Lively. Wayfarer’s previous $400 million countersuit against Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, alleging defamation and extortion, was dismissed last June.

Financial Arguments & Disputed Damages

Lively’s legal team had argued she suffered substantial financial losses, including tens of millions in lost endorsements and reduced earnings. Wayfarer’s counsel disputed these figures, asserting they were exaggerated.

Amir Kaltgrad, Wayfarer’s attorney, described Lively’s financial projections as “pie in the sky” and pointed to the performance of her non-alcoholic beverage brand, Betty Buzz, as evidence against her claims. Fabien Manohar Thayamballi, another Wayfarer lawyer, challenged Lively’s assertion that negative online comments were solely the result of manipulation.

Resolution & Moving Forward

Despite behind-the-scenes tensions, both Lively and Baldoni expressed a desire to move forward “constructively and in peace.” The joint statement underscored their shared commitment to the film’s message and fostering a respectful online environment.

The resolution of this case marks a significant turning point for all parties involved, allowing them to move beyond the legal conflict and focus on their respective endeavors. The settlement avoids a potentially damaging and highly publicized trial, offering a degree of closure after a prolonged period of legal wrangling.
