Following his rescue of Wally West from Hunter Zolomon in Absolute Flash #19, Ray Palmer reveals a revamped origin story. This new iteration of the character explores a much more volatile and unknown subatomic force than seen in mainstream DC continuity.
Swapping White Dwarf Stars for "Dark and Impenetrable" Particles
In mainstream DC Comics, Ray Palmer’s journey typiclly begins with the discovery of a white dwarf star fragment. This allows him to create a compression lens and a matrix belt to stabilize his molecular structure while shrinking. However, the new Absolute Universe version takes a significantly more chaotic path.
As the source reports, the Absolute version of Palmer utilized his time at STAR Labs to push the boundaries of human perception. This pursuit led him to encounter a "dark and impenetrable" particle that caused his laboratory equipment to explode, ultimately forcing him to develop his specialized Atom gear to harness the power of the subatomic world for combat and traversal.
Linking the Atom to Wally West's Still Point and Omega Energy
The discovery of these new particles suggests a deeper connection to the fundamental mechanics of the Absolute Universe. There is significant speculation that these dark particles may be intertwined with the "Still Point" that powers Wally West, as well as the Omega energy that defines this entire reality.
If these particles act as the "subatomic glue" for the Absolute Universe, Ray Palmer's scientific curiosity could inadvertently trigger a cosmic-level event. This shift moves the character from a standard academic researcher into a pivotal figure whose research might place him on a direct collision course with major cosmic threats.
Will Ray Palmer's ressearch lead to a clash with Darkseid?
While the new origin provides more scientific mystery, it leaves severral major questions unanswered. it remains unverified if Palmer’s investigation into these dark particles will eventually bring him into direct conflict with Darkseid. Furthermore, the report notes that the current Absolute Justice lineup—which features Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Jo Mullein (Green Lantern),and the Flash—is still relatively small.
It is yet to be seen if the Atom will officially join this roster in the five-part Absolute Justice miniseries, or if other key heroes like Steel, Hawkman, or John Stewart will be integrated into the team to expand the lineup.
Elevating "Secondary" heroes like Shazam and Firestorm
The Absolute Universe appears to be a landscape where characters who are often overshadowed in the main timeline can take center stage. In the primary DC continuity, icons like Superman and Batman frequently dominate the narrative, leaving powerful members like Billy Batson (Shazam), Firestorm, and Captain Atom to play supporting roles.
By tying the Atom's origin to the very essence of the Absolute Universe's energy, DC is providing a mehcanism to make "secondary" heroes essential to the survival of the world.. This approach allows characters with niche powers, such as Metamorpho or Red Tornado, to become indispensable in specialized missions within this new reality.
