Following a highly publicized defamation trial with Johnny Depp, Amber Heard has relocated to Madrid, Spain, and is living a private life away from the spotlight.

From Hollywood Star to Private Citizen

Amber Heard, who rose to prominence in the 2006 horror film All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, is now living a significantly quieter life in Madrid, two decades after achieving global stardom. This change follows the contentious defamation lawsuit with her former husband, Johnny Depp, which concluded in 2022.

The Defamation Trial and Its Aftermath

The lawsuit stemmed from an op-ed Heard wrote in The Washington Post in 2018, detailing alleged abuse during their relationship. While she didn't name Depp directly, his legal team argued the article clearly implied he was a domestic abuser.

The six-week televised trial resulted in Depp being awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, while Heard received $2 million in damages from a countersuit. Both parties initially appealed, but ultimately reached a settlement in December 2022.

Seeking a Fresh Start in Spain

Heard’s life dramatically shifted following the trial. She has not taken on any acting roles since, with reports suggesting she has been effectively ‘blacklisted’ in Hollywood.

The intense scrutiny and negative publicity prompted her to seek a fresh start abroad. She initially took refuge in Mallorca, Spain, renting a property under the pseudonym Martha Jane Cannary, the birth name of Calamity Jane.

She then relocated to Madrid with her four-year-old daughter, Oonagh Paige, and her then-girlfriend, photographer Bianca Butti. This move was a deliberate attempt to distance herself from the aftermath of the trial and rebuild her life away from the spotlight.

A New Chapter

Heard expressed that settling the case allowed her to “emancipate” herself from a situation she had been trying to leave for over six years, emphasizing that she made no admission of wrongdoing and retained the freedom to speak her mind.

Early Relationships and Career

Before her move to Spain, Heard’s relationship with Depp began in 2009 after meeting on the set of The Rum Diary. They married in 2016, but the marriage was short-lived, ending in divorce after just over a year.

Heard filed for divorce and a restraining order, alleging abuse throughout their relationship. Following the divorce, she dated Elon Musk until 2018 and was later linked to director Andy Muschietti. Her relationship with Bianca Butti, a cinematographer, lasted for two years.

Now, at 40 years old, Heard appears to be prioritizing a private life, focusing on raising her daughter and navigating a new chapter away from the pressures of Hollywood.
