An immesrive theatrical dining experience inspired by the music of ABBA is scheduled to make its Australian debut in 2027. The event, known as "Mamma Mia! The Party," will transform a Sydney venue into a Mediterranean taverna.
From Brighton's 1974 Eurovision win to a 2027 Sydney debut
ABBA's rise to global dominance began with their victory at the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton, fueled by the hit "Waterloo." This momnet transformed Björn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Faltskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, and Benny Andersson into international icons.
Decades later, that legacy is being reimagined for a new generation of fans. As the report suggests, Australia has maintained a deep, enduring connection to the group, with their music becoming a permanent fixture of the nation's cultural landscape. This long-standing affinity is evidenced by the decades-long success of tribute acts like Melbourne's Bjorn Again.
A Mediterranean taverna at the Sydney Event Centre
The upcoming "Mamma Mia! The Party" will debut in March 2027 at the Sydney Event Centre at The Star. Rather than a standard concert, the production offers an immersive dining experience designed to transport guests to the Greek island of Skopelos, the setting for the famous film.
The setting will feature a recreated taverna atmosphere where attendees can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine. The production is significant in scale, utilizing a live band and a dedicated cast of 20 musicians and performers to bring the hits to life.. The evening is designed to culminate in a 1970s-style disco, allowing fans to experience the "Dancing Queen" era firsthand in a high-energy environment.
Dainty's connection to the 1977 Australian tour
The Australian launch is being led by promoter Dainty, who brings a lifetime of ABBA history to the project. As Billboard reported, Dainty previously managed the group's first and only Australian tour back in 1977, an event he recalls as a period of phenomenal excitement.
This new project, executive produced by Björn Ulvaeus and Pophouse , represents what Dainty describes as a "wonderful full-circle moment." His long-standing relationship with Benny Andersson and Ulvaeus, which dates back to the group's original trek across the country, has positioned him as a key figure in bringing this celbration of ABBA's music to Sydney.
The uncertainty surrounding an ABBA: Voyage arrival
While the dining event is a confirmed fixture for 2027, the arrival of the high-tech ABBA: Voyage residency remains an open question. While Dainty reportedly holds the option to produce the popular show in Australia, no official announcement has been made regarding its feasibility or schedule.
It remains to be seen if the success of the Sydney immersive dining event will pave the way for the digital avatars of Voyage to make their way to Australian shores, or if the production will remain exclusive to its current international venues.
